I am a full-time teacher and part-time Educational Consultant (specialising in Science/Physics).
I began my teaching career at Newent Community School, an 11-18 Mixed Comprehensive in rural Gloucestershire. I was lucky enough to work alongside a number of innovative and experienced teachers who helped me to develop my practice and my passion for teaching and learning. Whilst at Newent I had an additional responsibility for the school’s Moodle based Virtual Learning Environment and was part of a team developing and delivering a discrete Learning to Learn course. Newent was a fantastic place for an NQT to learn and experiment in the classroom, and my time there had a significant influence on my strong belief that effective education is about more than just delivery of curriculum content.
In 2010 I relocated to the North West of England and the role of Science Innovator at Woodchurch High School, a large 11-16 Mixed Comprehensive near Birkenhead, Merseyside. As Science Innovator I was responsible for developing the curriculum, delivering CPD, coaching and mentoring of staff (both within Science and across the school) and providing both formal and informal lesson observations and feedback.
In 2012 I was promoted to Head of Science, leading a team of 14 teachers and 4 technicians. Although my experience of Middle Leadership was both challenging and rewarding, and allowed me to develop my leadership skills, I found the demands of management allowed me less time for my real passion: CPD and teaching & learning. I decided that my career needed a change in direction, and began to look for more opportunities to share my passion with others.
In 2014 I began working with Liverpool John Moores University and the Science Learning Centre North West as a Leader of Professional Development in Science Education, delivering Science CPD to Merseyside schools. I have also delivered a number of CPD sessions via Science Learning Centres and have worked on consultancy projects for the National STEM Centre (Myscience.org).
In 2015 I took up the role of Head of Physics (KS4) at Upton-by-Chester High School, Chester, a Mixed 11-18 Comprehensive. Not only has working in this new environment given me fantastic new experiences and opportunities, the step down from Middle Leadership has given me more time and flexibility to work on consultancy projects. I have found the combination of teaching AND consultancy work to be mutually beneficial. Delegates at CPD sessions have been very positive about CPD delivery from a practicing teacher, and consultancy projects and resources I have worked on have been praised for their ease of use in the classroom. Likewise, consultancy work provides me with opportunities to improve my own teaching practice by keeping up to date with developments in education, creating new resources and collaborating with other teachers.
Further details of my work in education can be found via my LinkedIn profile.
Outside of education my time is mainly spent with my wonderful family (my wife and two young children) or (occasionally) going for a run. I’m a bit of a music geek, and a long-suffering follower of West Ham United Football Club.
